St. Johns County Black History Trail

We’re proud to showcase our collaboration with the St. Johns Cultural Council (SJCC) to develop the Black Heritage Trail of St. Johns County in Florida. This region, which includes St. Augustine, holds more than 450 years of Black history from the 17th century to the modern Civil Rights era. Working closely with the SJCC team, Quatrefoil helped design a connected experience that includes interpretive onsite signage, a companion print guidebook, and a history-rich website. Each reveals little-known stories and showcases the local, regional, and national importance of St. Johns’ historical sites.

The project demonstrates how digital, web, and print elements can work together to create a multi-platform experience for visitors. Trail markers and roadside panels invite people to explore historic neighborhoods, churches, schools, and Civil Rights landmarks. The digital and print materials extend the experience and open it to the world at large. Taken together or independently, these entry points allow visitors to explore however it makes the most sense to them. All of these modes encourage discovery, reflection, and a deeper appreciation of St. Johns County’s enduring Black history.
